OBV Explained: How On-Balance Volume Reveals What Price Can't Tell You

Most indicators are built entirely from price. OBV is different — it adds volume into the equation, accumulating it directionally to show whether buying or selling pressure is truly behind a move. When price and OBV agree, a trend is healthy. When they diverge, price is often lying.

Developed by Joseph Granville in 1963, OBV remains one of the most useful confirmation tools available. In crypto — where wash trading and thin liquidity can create misleading price moves — volume context matters even more than in traditional markets.

How OBV Is Calculated

The math is disarmingly simple. Each candle, you either add the entire period's volume to a running total or subtract it — depending on whether price closed higher or lower.

If close > previous close: OBV = OBV_prev + Volume If close < previous close: OBV = OBV_prev - Volume If close == previous close: OBV = OBV_prev (unchanged)

The absolute value of OBV is meaningless on its own — it depends entirely on your start date. What matters is the direction and slope of the OBV line over time. A rising OBV means up-candles are attracting more volume than down-candles. A falling OBV means the opposite.

Quick mental model: Think of OBV as a vote counter. Every candle, buyers or sellers cast votes weighted by how many coins changed hands. OBV is the running score. When it trends up, buyers are winning — not just the battle of price, but the war of volume.

The Two Ways Traders Use OBV

1. Trend Confirmation

When price is making higher highs and OBV is also making higher highs, the uptrend has real volume behind it. Big buyers are accumulating on up-candles, not just paper trading. This is the healthiest scenario for a continuation trade.

On a 1-hour BTC chart, you might see price grind from $60,000 to $65,000 over two weeks. If OBV rises in lockstep — adding volume every time a candle closes green — that's confirmation the move has institutional depth. It's far more reliable than a clean price chart alone.

The same logic works in reverse. A downtrend confirmed by falling OBV shows sellers are controlling volume, not just squeezing out weak hands.

2. Divergence — The Early Warning Signal

OBV divergence is where the indicator earns its reputation. It occurs when price and OBV move in opposite directions — and it's consistently one of the best early warnings of trend exhaustion available.

Bearish divergence: Price makes a new high, but OBV fails to make a new high. This means the rally was driven by fewer shares/coins than the previous push — volume is drying up. BTC hits $68,000 but OBV peaks at $65,000 levels. Sellers are quietly entering while price still looks strong. The next leg down often follows within 5–15 candles on a 4h timeframe.

Bullish divergence: Price makes a new low, but OBV holds above its previous low. This means sellers are losing conviction — sell-candle volume is shrinking even as price gets pushed down. ETH falls to $2,800 but OBV stays above its $3,100-level low. Buyers are absorbing the supply. Reversals from this setup often produce 8–15% bounces in crypto within days.

Divergence timing tip: Don't act on OBV divergence the moment you spot it. Wait for a confirmation candle — a close back above the most recent swing low (for bullish divergence) or below the recent swing high (for bearish). Divergence can persist for 10–20 candles before resolving. Patience turns a good signal into a good trade.

OBV in Practice: What to Watch For

OBV Slope During Consolidation

When price is chopping sideways in a tight range, OBV often trends clearly in one direction. This is one of its most powerful applications. If price trades between $42,000 and $44,000 for a week but OBV is steadily rising, smart money is accumulating inside that range. The breakout, when it comes, is far more likely to go up than down.

The opposite is equally informative. A flat price + declining OBV is a classic distribution pattern. Institutions are selling into perceived stability. Retail sees a sideways chart; OBV sees quiet liquidation.

OBV Breakouts

Just like price, OBV forms its own support and resistance levels. When OBV breaks above a multi-week high — even before price does — that's a leading signal. The volume is front-running the move. On Strategester's signal dashboard, combining OBV trend direction with an EMA crossover filter dramatically reduces false breakout entries.

Limitations to Keep in Mind

OBV treats all volume as equal regardless of candle size. A tiny 0.1% up-candle on 10,000 BTC gets counted the same as a 3% surge on the same volume. Some traders address this with the Chaikin Money Flow indicator, which weights volume by where price closes within the candle's range — but OBV's simplicity is also its durability. It has worked across equities, futures, and crypto for over 60 years without modification.

OBV also works best on higher timeframes (1h, 4h, daily) where volume patterns are more meaningful. On 1-minute or 5-minute charts, individual candles carry too little statistical weight and the line becomes noisy.

On Strategester, you can observe OBV trend alignment across 4 major crypto markets simultaneously — BTC, ETH, SOL, and BNB — and see how it stacks with momentum indicators like RSI and MACD to form confluence signals.
